Songhua River Bridge, Heilongjiang, China

4.0 (61 reviews) Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent Ranking #23 in Harbin Bridges

Oldest railway bridge

The railway bridge was originally built by Russians in the 1900s. It is the oldest railway bridge on the Songhua River, Harbin and the first cross-river bridge in the city. It is now open to tourists to walk along the track. From the bridge, I had a great view of frozen Songhua River. There were many visitors strolling down along the frozen river. Though the bridge is not spectacular, its historical significance is worth a visit, if you are already nearby.

120 year old Russian built bridge
On the face of it this bridge is just a bridge, but this was the first ever rail bridge built across the Songhua river. Built by the Russians in 1900 it is a feat of engineering and only stopped being in use for trains about five years ago, when the new rail bridge was opened. So from a historical point of view this is a very important bridge in Northern China. Dozens of coaches park up outside the bridge and hundreds of tourists get out and walk on the bridge (placing love locks on it). There are some street food vendors here and there is a train parked just across the road from the bridge. If you care nothing about history or culture like some of the reviews on here, then you will find nothing much of interest here...but if you do then this is an important piece of history.

    Sōnghūa Bridge stroll
The pedestrian-only bridge (although there is also a separate bicycle lane) is not far from both Harbin Central Railway Station and the city epicentre, ie, Zhongyang Street. The bridge is an ideal spot for a stroll on a Harbin spring or summer night. Like most Chinese bridges it lights up at night gaily and vividly, the time most people choose to visit it. At the other end you’ll find the usual set-up of souvenir sellers. The bridge is of the cable truss type, originally built by the Russians around the end of the 19th century.
