Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, Hawaii, United States

4.5 (817 reviews) Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent Ranking #9 in Island of Hawaii National Parks

Great place for family trip

My family of four visited there on a recent day and found a snorkeling site (two steps) near the park extremely enjoyable. Easy access from the shore and the waters there offered a big variety of marine life. Corals are sadly dead, though. If you travel with young children or elderly, they can also chill there by staying in tidal pools which are safe and fun. There is a paid parking lot for $5 per car, but I also saw people parking on the street. I actually didn’t go to the park itself.

    Interesting historic site
It was interesting to come here and learn about the ahupua'a land divisions and agriculture of the Hawaiians. Due to time constraints we only did the hike as far as the petroglyphs, which were cool to see. I do wish we had taken the time to go down to the beach and see the turtles - maybe next time. The ranger at the visitor center was super friendly and helpful (I didn't catch her name). The site is right near downtown Kailua-Kona and is free so definitely worth a visit.

    Needs more signage
Whilst interesting the Petroglyphs were a little underwhelming; on later research these are not the best in the islands. Whilst there is a boardwalk to take you round the lava, here are no boards out to say stop here and look. As such you either spend a lot of time looking at native lava wondering if a line is a natural feature or a petroglyph, or you risk missing some.
