Hana Highway - Road to Hana, Hawaii, United States

4.5 (9.998 reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #64 in Maui Scenic Drives

A MUST DO ! JUST REMEMBER THERE IS NO CELL PHONE RECEPTION !!

This scenic road is an iconic drive that connects Kaluhui to Hana in east Maui. The 64-mile highway features narrow winding roads and over 50 bridges, taking you past gorgeous beaches, rugged coastlines, lush forests, waterfalls, pools, and hiking trails. It takes at least three hours to complete the Hana Highway, but you can make it a full-day trip, depending on how many stops you make. You can even spend the night at Waianapanapa State Park, where you can stay in a cabin or camp close to the shore. Don't miss all the best sights by joining a Road to Hana tour, which will have all transport sorted. – Tripadvisor

A MUST DO ! JUST REMEMBER THERE IS NO CELL PHONE RECEPTION !!
Highly recommend !! Although driving it I would only recommend to those who are confident drivers who do not get anxious really easily. If in doubt take a tour bus. Also recommend bringing Dramamine. Top Tips- Download the Gypsy app who will be your personal tour guide. I don’t know what we would have done w/out it ! Waianapanapa state park requires a reservation weeks in advance and is well worth the fee ! Just remember to screen shot your reservation QR code since there is no cell phone service for most of your drive. However, if you forget to screen shot your QR code like I did, I was advised to drive about 10min to the city of Hana where they have some cell phone reception to be able to access my email. We had a 10 hour long day but it was worth it !!

Beautiful drive, consider an audio tour!
Loved this drive - definitely thank your driver as it can be a daunting (but definitely worthwhile) task to take on the many one lane bridges and corners. Two recommendations for those looking to take on the road: 1. During COVID, certain stops (like the black sand beach) require a prior reservation to access. Unfortunately you CAN NOT make the reservation for same day travel so plan ahead or risk missing this stop. 2. Check out the GyPSY audio guide (just bring a charging cable as it drains your phone). Can be downloaded for around $14 (there was a deal on where you could get all of Maui for $7 USD while we were there). Audio guide tracks your progress and lets you know where the must see stops are and what is likely to be a busy area that can be safely missed. In addition to letting you know safe areas to park and must see stops, it also gives you a great history of the island all the way back from Hana. Can't imagine having down this trip without it! Overall, a great drive and really beautiful scenery.
