Be aware of the (albeit limited) free option!
Going on board the ships is expensive, especially as a family and if you don't have discounted tickets. However, if you have limited funds (or time) then you can enter the dockyards for free! Just ask for a 'charity ticket' at the ticket counter. They might ask if you'd like to buy a souvenir programme by way of a donation and it's an excellent idea as it will tell you what you're seeing. On the free ticket you can walk up to the ships but not board them (and not the Mary Rose as it's enclosed). You can get very close though, and you can also go into Boathouse 4 and a little dockyard exhibition. Boathouse 4 especially is great... some historic boats and a few activities for kids. If you are in Portsmouth and don't have the time or money for the full Dockyard experience, don't miss out on the opportunity to at least look around. For free, it's great value! Give yourself 1-2 hours to have a walk around and maybe a bit longer if you want to eat at one of the cafes.

Great tour by audioguide, great histroric value
The HMS Victory is a must see if you are around. In addition there are other exhibitions as well, but they fade after the HMS Victoty visit a little bit. 4 out of 5 points due to two reasons. 1. I would have loved to have a guided tour not only by audioguide. There are tours sometimes on a private basis but with 1 week or more booking in advance. 2. The restaurant in bootshouse #4 upper roof was a shame, very unfriendly and rude behaviour. After lunchtime when it was empty (2 out 20 tables were occupied) we were not allowed a windows table but the only table which was not cleaned yet, it seems obvious that this was on purpose. Some other couple also left with the same experience. So the overall impression was a little bit impacted, avoid bootshouse #4 ;)
