Wooden Wonder

Our 5yr old grandson want to see the “pirate ship” and so we made Victory our first stop. There are complimentary audio guides but we knew there wouldn’t be time to use them as obviously a young child has a short attention span! A lot of the interior deck areas are low in height and you have to watch your head - I was wearing a flat cap and one of the helpful staff recommended wearing it back to front in order to spot the beams better. To be honest you could easily spend an hour or two looking around/taking everything in but although it didn’t take us long this visit, we have one of the annual return tickets and so will be back again on our own next time. Your HMS Victory ticket also gives admission to the related museum nearby and this is also worth a look round.

Superb way to spend a few hours learning about this great ship
My wife, myself and two long-time friends, all in our sixties, visited HMS Victory on a cold, wet and windy day and we had a great few hours walking around both the museum and ship. We were advised to start off at the museum, which we did and this was a great recommendation as it gave us a fantastic insight into the great ship’s history before we boarded her to look around. The ship itself has been amazingly restored and the media devices we were given were superb at taking us through what we were looking at. All agreed that this was a fantastic way to spend a few hours, especially as the weather was so awful outside. The day was made even more special as both the UK’s new aircraft carriers were docked not too far away, and are an amazing sight to see.

Victory, the worlds oldest working naval flagship
The audio guide is good, but a knowledgeable person is much better. We learnt so much about this historic ship and her place in the history of Britain (back when it was great) and the fight against Napoleon. There is a very good reason for the statue of Nelson being on that column in Trafalgar Square. The restoration means the ship exterior is largely covered over, but there is still so much to see; the restoration work, where Nelson was shot and where he died, the gun decks and day to day life of the crew, Nelsons, the captain and officers cabins, the holds for stores, the massive anchor cable and rope that hauled it in. Also see the Nelson gallery just across the yard. Altogether a great day out.
