Canon del Rio Yumuri, Guantanamo Province, Cuba

The place you are looking for

This place is as beautiful as it is remote and largely 'untouristed'. As a traveller, it's the kind of place you can only dream of finding. My partner and I ended up there purely by fate. We had a rental car and as is the tradition in Cuba, gave somebody a lift home. She lived in the beautiful ocean side town and quickly had us on a boat up the river for $2 each. it was dry season, so we walked much of it. Maria told us about the area and her work as a coffee picker. We came to a beautiful swimming hole, without another single person in sight. We spent a lovely afternoon there, we were introduced to all the neighbours and the local kids and had a delicious and cheap seafood lunch. The people in this town don't see many tourists (largely in thanks to a fairly negative lonely planet review), so if you happen to come here, bring some spare stuff you can afford to leave behind. Pens, old clothes, toiletries, anything really. They will be grateful for it.

    Excellent Tours!!
Don't go to Cuba without going to Baracoa. It is so beautiful and so different from Havana. Once in Baracoa, the only way to see the sites is to hire alberthehiker as your local tour guide. My friend and I were supposed to hike to El Yunque with Alber but our flight was delayed by a day. Alber was very flexible. When we did arrive, he took us on a very customizable tour of the city including a chocolate making demonstration, a short hike and boat ride in the Yumuri River, and a few local stops along the way. Alber made sure that we stopped at some great miradors to take lots of photos. Obviously, the best part of the tour is spending time with local people learning more about the town and it's history. Alber has an extensive tour network so he was able to arrange transportation from Baracoa to Santiago in a very nice air conditioned vehicle as well as some additional day tours in Santiago including the cemetery where Castro is buried, El Morro fortress, Basilica del Cobre and a short hike up Gran Piedro. I wished that he and his staff could have accompanied us through the rest of our travels in Cuba as it was so much better traveling with locals who had all of the insider knowledge. I would definitely recommend contacting Alber for any travel related needs on the East side of Cuba.

This is a truly Cuban paradise
We hire a Jeep in Baracoa to go to Yumuri. The road to this place is a beautiful landscape all the way. Once we arrived, we took a boat through the river and arrived into paradise. Nature lovers must go here
