Awesome Island with clear water - just around the corner of Zhuhai
We went on a trip to Wailingding Dao with our interns and enjoyed two lovely days there. Wailingding Island is just a 1,5hours ferry ride away from Zhuhai, so perfect for a weekend trip. The ferry leaves Zhuhai from the Xiangzhou Ferry Port (香洲港客运码头), one way trip costs about 70RMB. Wailingding Dao has clear water and a nice beach, so if the weather gets warmer, you would be able to swim. If you don't fancy to stay in a hotel, you also have the option to camp on the island. There is a nice walkingway along the rocky coastline which also leads up to the mountain. Hiking up the mountain takes a bit more than one hour, make sure to bring some water! Once at the peak you can enjoy an amazing view over the island and might even see Hongkong in the distance. If you are starving after the hike, don't miss out on the seafood!

Beautiful daytrip
There are many Islands close to Zhuhai so we had to pick one for a day trip. After some research and the locals recommendation we picked Wai Lingding. To get there we firstly had to take a ferry boat for 90 minuets. It was easy to buy tickets at the port from a machine using WeChat wallet but you could also get the tickets over the counter. Upon arrival it was easy to find the way around this place and we started with the beach. Later we walked along the rocky coastline on the other side and hiked to the top of the mountain. This was absolutely worth it when we saw the view from the top. It took us less than 1 hour. My friend bought a lot of dried fish and shrimps from a local lady to take back to friends and family in Beijing. Beautiful island with a seafood market and a street full of restaurants. If you like seafood this is a really nice place to spend an afternoon. The island do have quite a few hotels as well but we just made it a day trip and after walking around to all the major hotspots it was time to take the ferry boat back to Zhuhai.

island life in the city
Technically, Wai Ling Ding belongs to the municipality of Zhuhai, although it's a 1 hour 20 boat trip to get there. But then right away you are on slow-time. lovely al fresco restaurants, beaches and marvelous views. The water is clean, save the odd scrap of plastic and nice to swim in, something you can't do on the mainland. Some good hiking awaits you a well. Hotels could use some updating, but it's still a great way to while away a weekend or, better yet, a couple of weekdays. Go off-season for some real quiet time.
