Shaoguan Danxia Mountain Geopark, Guangdong, China

4.5 (241 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Renhua County Mountains

My favorite part of our trip to China this time

Beautiful mountains with interesting rock formations. Worth seeing both sides. Unbelievably breathtaking views. Some parts of the climb up (and down) are very challenging. Not for everyone. In some places, incredibly steep but so worth the scary moments. Concessions along the way in several places. Can't imagine how they transport the concessions! Got up to see the sunrise on the second day but unfortunately, too hazy/cloudy so that didn't happen...but it was a fun hike nontheless with beautiful views different from the other side of the mountain. Much less strenuous hike to see the sunrise. Definitely take the cable car. Otherwise, make sure you have a very good flashlight!

    Spectacular & unique rock formations
WOW. Very scenic enchanting mountain area. There are many massive rock formations that are very unique, Some look like large pillars, stone fortresses, bridges, mammals, birds, and others totally one of a kind.

Useful information if you want to go
Almost everyone will need to access this park via Shaoguan. In Shaoguan, go to the bus station next to East railway station. From the river, the bus that goes to DanXiaShan is on the right side. Busses leave about every 10 minutes and tickets are purchased on the bus for 16rmb. The trip is just over an hour to the park. Sit on the left side of the bus for views and to keep the rising sun out of your eyes. The bus drops you just steps from the ticket counter. You can hire a tour guide at the ticket counter too, not sure of their English proficiency.... It was posted entry used to be 200rmb per person and now it is 150. You can also buy a combo ticket to do the boat ride for 220rmb. Your ticket gets you access to the park for 2 days. Keep your ticket handy as it must be re-checked at the entrance to the big areas. You will scan your index finger and this will let you back in for the second day. Cable car ride gets you a great ride. It is 40rmb to the top, 65 for two-way, but if you want to see more sights, just get the one-way and hike down the mountain to see viewpoints, temples, and ancient tombs, etc. SKIP Pearl Pavillion. It is a hard, steep ascent to a structure that has no views due to overgrown vegetation. I saw one foreign tourist during my trip, but the park is mapped, explained, and has all street signs in English. Not recommended for young kids. It's too much walking, and some of the barriers would not stop a wandering toddler from falling down the mountain. Last bus back to Shauguan is at 7, but don't wait too long as many will already be full when they arrive to the park. I was on the 7:40am bus to DanXiaShan, and walked about 90% of the park by 4pm. I traveled solo and at a good pace. Also, only a couple of the service stands were open, so carry your water. You don't need to bring a buffet, but some light snacks would help between stands.
