Vesting Bourtange, Groningen Province, The Netherlands

Impressive

It is very important that we still can find places which are not locked down during this COVID-19 time. Of course musea are closedown but you can enter this impressive fortress which was never captured by enemies. In the form of five-pointed star it is surrounded by canals. The town behind the walls and embankments has beer restored in 20-th century but looks pretty similar as original drawings. You can spend all day long at this place.

Well worth a visit for a relaxing family day out
What a lovely place to spend a day. We really didn't expect it to take so long to look around but it was so interesting to amble round the little streets, walk around the top of the fortifications. Despite a walk into it from the car park outside the fortified village it was all very accessible for those with mobility issues, prams or buggy's. We arrived early, before everything was open except a cafe where we had coffee and a lovely warm apple cake. Later we had a delicious lunch at the smaller traditional pub. The museum was interesting, spread around several buildings in the village and in one we were able to listen to the film about the history of the place with English subtitles, there were also plenty of signs and information in English for non Dutch or German speaking visitors, unlike most of this region. Its worth buying the museum pass as there are some fun and interactive activities for kids of all ages and we enjoyed taking part in a "battle re-enactment" firing foam cannon balls at each other (family stress relief on holiday!) in the main museum building. There is also a flying goose ride where you can experience what its like to soar over the surrounding moorland, not on the scale of a theme park ride but unexpected fun, especially for those filming mums expression as she jolted around! Can highly recommend a trip here if you are in the area.

Do not miss out on this Gem when in the neighbourhood!
Its lovely to walk around the old vesting. Walking on the walls gives you a stunning view over the whole place both inside and outside of the vesting. Its history is amazing and walking around the small streets will make you go back into time. During summer its even more gogeaus because of all the flowers and roses you can see within the walls of the vesting. Dont forget its shape which is very cool and was common back in the 15th century. Very glad to see that the whole project to bring this veste back to its older glorydays worked out soo well. A true Gem and a great part of Dutch History!
