Great exhibitions

I'm not informed if there is such thing as prize given to the best museum in NL, but Veenkoloniaal Museum Veendam is Nr.1 at least on my list. In respect to permanent collection many museums do excell, but Veenkoloniaal is exceptional in well thought out and executed shoert term exhibitions. Kudos goes to the one and only Mr. Riga (director of museum Hendrik Andries Hachmer). Recommended without reservations!

This museum brings more than the name suggests.
Yes, there actually is peat ("veen" in Dutch) in this museum, and the history and origination of the peat material is explained, but there is more. The "Veenkoloniaal museum", situated in an abandoned heritage high school building (being inside brought also memories of my school days long ago), paints the life of the "Veenkolonie" area on the height of the activities. For instance a mock-up of life at a lock with workshops and general store is interesting. Also the peat trade with the Baltic states has a place in the story. See some pictures I added. Outside a peat barge is put on display; this barge can be visited; the skipper's quarters are really tiny. On the first floor, an exposition of wood sculptures, not related to the main theme, is being held. Entrance through the Tourist Agency counter in the Van Berensteyn building next door. An entrance fee is levied; free entrance with the annual Dutch museum pass. The entrance ticket entitles to a small discount on coffee or tea in the Van Berensteyn restaurant next door.

    Great overview of local history
The locak area has some unique history, and this museum shows and tells it all, from the early peat diggings to the lateramazing role this modest town played in the seafaring history. Some completely furnished shops and a pub lend a bit of nostalgia. Well worth a vist!
