Ter Apel Monastery
Ter Apel Monastery, built in 1465, is a former monastery in the village of Ter Apel in the northeastern Dutch province of Groningen. It is located on a forested ridge of sand along the ancient trade route from Münster i/W (in Germany) to the city of Groningen. For passing travellers and pilgrims the monastery was a place of hospitality and dedication. Even though accents have shifted, Ter Apel Monastery has been a meeting place even to this day. It is a meeting place for art and culture enthusiasts because of the old and new architecture, and the permanent and changing exhibitions. It is a meeting place for fans of old and new (church) music, the acoustics of the monastery church are unsurpassed. It is for nature lovers because its wooded rural location offers plenty of walks. And also for anyone who just needs a moment of peace and reflection.

Wonderfull Monastery in a even more gorgeous forrest! A true Gem!
Our final stop from our trip through Groningen. It was the best to finish of our trip at this very pretty monastery with its even more turbulent history. The whole map of the monastery is well explained and easy to follow. Due to Covid you had to follow the arrows which we're very easy to see which made it even better to manouvre yourself through the place. Its stunning to see how well maintained the place is and its surroundings. Inside everything is very clean and tide and the toilets are very clean too. Take you time to inhale the history of this place and dont forget to visit the garden inside. During summer the place is full with pretty roses and other plants. The staff is very kind and helpfull. We bought a few beers to support the locals. We will be back one day!! Dont miss out on this one!

No English signage!!!
Wonderful building with beautifully restored parts, but this must be the only UNESCO world heritage site I have ever visited that is entirely devoid of information signage in English. The only English signage was a negative "don't sit here". Come on guys - fix this. It is not difficult.
