Museum aan de A (opvolger van het Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum), Groningen Province, The Netherlands

4.5 (159 reviews) Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent Ranking #6 in Groningen Speciality Museums

A pleasant place to spend 1-2 hours in Groningen

Museum aan de A is the successor to the Northern Maritime Museum, which is definitely changing course after 90 years. From a museum about the Northern Netherlands shipping to a museum about the city and province. About the life of the (extra)ordinary Groningen residents. About successes and downsides. From Rabenhaupt's victory in 1672 to Groningen's involvement in slavery. Of course we will also continue to tell stories about Groningen shipping. Because Groningen would not be Groningen without shipping. We need a few more years for the transition. So work in progress. For lovers of a smooth historical snack and the cultural and historical gourmet: Museum aan de A is for everyone.

Make Time For the Maritime Museum
I don't often leave reviews for attractions/events, but I make an exception in this case. I know the Dutch fascination with ships/boats is almost as popular as their fascination with bicycles and cheese. I am not usually one who is wooed with ships and originally I had no plans to visit this museum, despite being in Groningen for a full week. I am VERY glad that I made the time for this museum however. First, the buildings that it is housed in is very very interesting and quite historical just in itself. I would go here JUST for that. The museum does an excellent job at squeezing in a lot of stuff and information into a relatively smaller space (something that the Dutch are quite adept at). There is much to see here, which I wasn't expecting much due to the seemingly limited space of the museum itself. The museum did an excellent job at displaying maritime history and also at explaining Dutch history and culture. I think this museum is very underrated and unfortunately perhaps undervisited. I was the only person in the museum for about 2 hours. This museum is a wonderful little gem and it will be your misfortune if you skip it.

    A Gem for Ship Lovers
You must love the history of ships to get the full value. There are a few other interesting exhibits as well about cutting turf and life of the families of seafaring men but mostly it is all about the ships. The explanations are almost exclusively in Dutch and even those are not very elaborate. For instance, among the furniture of a captain there is a fireplace above which hangs a painting of a black Indian woman. No explanations given about who what when or where. Lots and lots of stairs.
