One of the Oldest Surviving Structures in Gonzales, TX

The Eggleston House is located just east of the Gonzales Memorial Museum. Built in 1845-46, this 'dog run' cabin is typical of the period. During hot Texas summers, the wide exterior hallway between the two enclosed rooms allowed for a welcome cooling breeze. Although you can't enter the rooms, they are both fully furnished and clearly visible through the plexiglass on the doorways. Admission is free.

Dog trot house and was one of the first permanent houses in Gonzales
My husband and I visited the 1845 Horace Eggleston House on a Tuesday in August. It is a dog trot house and was one of the first permanent houses in Gonzales. We were able to walk through the dog trot and peek into both rooms through clear plastic doors. We were there for about 10 minutes. There is no charge.

    Disappointed
We have an interest in log cabins so looking forward to visiting. The cabin is located near the Memorial Museum. The cabin didn't have a sign for open times. There was a button to push to listen to an audio tape - but it would start then stop and was worthless as you couldn't figure out what was being said. Looking in the plexiglass windows - we couldn't see what was inside - perhaps because it was around 11 there was too much reflective light.
