The third oldest Jewish congregation and the only neo-gothic Jewish sanctuary in the U. S. We offer tours that include our historic sanctuary and museum with many historic artifacts including two Torahs written in the 1400's (probably the oldest in the U.S.). A well crafted view into Savannah's Jewish history
Marc was an excellent docent - conveying his knowledge easily and comfortable answering our questions. We enjoyed learning about the history of the congregation and about the building itself. My only wish is that we had more time to visit in the museum section, but we understand security concerns meant that we couldn't be left alone and our docent had to go lead the next tour. Well worth the time and money.

A Unique and Important Part of Savannah's History
This Reform Jewish temple offers guided tours several times a day and has a small but interesting museum. The settlers who founded this congregation in 1733 arrived a year after James Oglethorpe founded Savannah with a charter that promised religious freedom, and they played an important part in the early history of the colony and the State of Georgia. The synagogue features some very old Torah scrolls as well as letters from most US presidents (Washington through Trump), along with other interesting artifacts. The building itself is highly unusual in that it is laid out like a gothic cathedral complete with a transept and apse, rather than in a more traditionally Jewish form. It is well worth a tour. Masks and proof of vaccination are currently required. If you want to attend services (you don't need to be Jewish), you should check their website. Due to Covid tracing concerns, you currently need to send an email in advance.
