Apartheid Museum, Gauteng, South Africa

Excellent museum.

This museum is architecturally interesting and packed with thoughtful, often brutal, reminders of South Africa’s history.

An excellent way to begin understanding apartheid in south Africa
The big red hop on/hop off bus takes you directly to the Apartheid Museum and is the easiest way to get there. When you buy your entrance ticket you are given a ticket that says "white" or "non-white" and told you must enter by the appropriate entrance. For a few seconds you experience someone deciding what color you are and which entrance you must use. The museum is very well laid out and you can get a good overview if you allow 2 hours to see the exhibits. Photography inside is not allowed. It is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9am to 5pm. If you are using the bus, don't miss the last bus back which leaves the museum at 4.21pm.

    Thought provoking, a must-visit
A must-visit when you're in Jozi. I recommend 2+ hours to have time to read and digest the descriptions and videos (some are quite disturbing and graphic). There are exhibits on Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela, as well as a huge collection on the Apartheid regime. It's moving and, a few times, I teared up. 5/5 for content, but 4/5 overall because the museum is confusing to navigate. Like previous reviewers noted, it's not organized chronologically. The museum seems to be trying to improve by putting up some arrows/signs, but you still have to back-track a lot as you walk through and there are some dead ends.
