Beautiful Setting
I visited here as part of a 32-day solo holiday with China Private Tours. The Mati Temple is a 90-minute or so scenic drive out of Zhangye. Tourists have been flocking to Zhangye with the growing popularity of the Danxia Rainbow Hills and I was able to see Mati in the morning and the hills in the afternoon quite comfortably. Mati Temple is set in the side of a sheer mountain rock wall, surrounded by snow-peaked mountains, which makes the scene quite beautiful. There is a bit of a walk involved from the village parking but nothing too strenuous. I was lucky to be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who was able to explain all the significance of the temple to the local Tibetan people. The intricately inked coloured flags are particularly fascinating. The gold Buddha inside a cave is an impressive sight. Mati Temple should absolutely be on your to-do list if in Zhangye.

Annual Festival at Mati Temple
Visited this spot several times, then heard of the annual festival, and now finally visited. Horse riding and Thangka Display are the main issues of the festival, mainly a local festival, with a wonderful ambiance. The local people are so friendly, and always want to be photographed with a foreign friend :-) I had a great time, and can you recommend the official weChat account [travelandmore]. My favorite moment of the day is the sunrise, and the late afternoon. The calm, the light and the discoloration of the air, so beautiful. On the day sometimes unfortunately too many Chinese tourists groups.

Amazing ancient temple hanging in the air
Mati, literally translate to Horse’s Hoof. Si means temple. So Matisi is also called Horse’s Hoof Temple. It is stunning to look at because the caves were cut into the face of a cliff. The facades of several temples jut out on the surface of the cliff, making them look like they are hanging in the air. I took a taxi from Zhangye which costed 200 Yuan round trip. It took 1.5 hours in the early morning (7:30 am) late October and I arrived at 9 am. when very few tourists were there. In the distance is the Qilian Mountain which was snow covered as the area received snow a week before. The strings of prayer flags remind me of Tibet. In fact, there is a Tibetan village in Mati. Once you get to the base of the cliff, you have to climb up steep stairs to get up to each level. I spent about two hours there. Well worth the trip
