The mountain and its caves
The mountain is noted for its caves, Maiji Grottoes. One hour or so away from the city, we took a nap on the way for our later climb at the mountain. After entering the main entrance, we took a buggy car to the mountain feet and walked uphill. The mountain looks like a hay stack, or a bump on the plain vast land with dense trees. Yet the climb was a strenuous task coz it is very tiresomely steep, even worse when the sun comes out at noon. Once we were on the top, it was all worthy! We got to see some important caves and open our eyesight on the forest under our foot. It was like the stairway to heaven, ha. * The climb is not suitable for young kids and elders, or people with acrophobia.

A Truly Unique Place!
One of my prized memories from living and studying in China was my trip to Maiji Mountain. It's a very old place, with construction dating back to the 4th and 5th century AD. Over all these years, the Buddhist monks carved out over 1,000 square meters of murals and over 7,000 sculptures - places like this are very rare, indeed. It could not be located in a more beautiful place. It is a very green place - surrounded by trees and moss and plant-covered mountains. One can see why the Buddhists chose this place to make their shrine. Paths criss-cross along the sheer face of the mountain, giving you an up-close view of the murals, sculptures, and grottoes while at the same time giving you a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. It can't be beaten. Please visit this place - it's unlike any other place you've ever been.

Spectacular Maiji Mountain
Maiji Mountain is in the top of my list of places visited in China. The place is completely off the tourist track and not that many westerners have made their way to this magical place. It is a bit out of the way however if you are visiting Xian and the Terracotta Warriors take 2 to 3 days aside to make it here, by train it takes about 3 hours from Xian to Tianshui. Tianshui is the nearest city and you can stay overnight here while visiting Maiji Mountain. This place is just spectacular.
