Chuncheon National Museum, Gangwon-do, South Korea

Some exceptional items, but currently under reconstruction

Sadly, most of the 500 arhats from Cheongpyeongsa Temple were on loan to the National Museum in Seoul when we visited, temporarily replaced by a beautiful calligraphy exhibit. Still, the museum is a good introduction to the art and history of Gangwon-do Province, with some great iron Buddhas, some enormous placenta jars as well as many other unique items. Ask a volunteer why the noses of the buddhas get rubbed off. Museum itself is a very attractive building.

A fine visit for a lazy day
Chuncheon National Museum is located near the Hoban Sports Complex and Kangwon National University. As with all Korean national museums there is no entrance fee, and it is well laid out. It is divided into wings, with a central area for study and meetings, along with a cafe. The wings are divided up mostly by different eras of Korean history, along with a wing for specifically Gangwon history and a wing for special exhibits or for exhibits on loan from other museums (items from Gyeongju's National Museum were on display when I visited) Most of the exhibits had a little English explanation.

    History and relaxing
It is a very nice place to spend the afternoon at. They have nice small coffee shop and wide outdoor resting/picknick area. I enjoyed the museum itself as well, it's very neatly arranged and you learn a lot about history and people of the Gangwon province, which is one of the most important provinces in the old times as well as during the Korean war, where it represented the front line. I myself was very impressed with the collection of the first family register dana't exposition.
