Church of the Pilgrim Virgin
The Church of the Pilgrim Virgin was my first and last stop in Pontevedra. We hurried on our Camino walk from Arcade to make the 1 pm Sunday Mass. It is in this church that Our Lady the Pilgrim Virgin is venerated, known for guiding pilgrims on their long journey to Santiago de Compostela. She is the patron saint of not only Pontevedra but the Portuguese Way. We were happy to get a seat for Mass because this is not a massive Gothic church. In fact, my first impression on seeing the church in the square was that it appeared dollhouse-like, petite and exquisitely detailed. The shape is unusual, inspired by the shape of a scallop shell, the pilgrim’s symbol. The shell is represented everywhere throughout the church, from the Stations of the Cross to the confessional doors. After Mass, we got our Pilgrim Passport book stamped. As we walked out of town a few days later, we posed for one last picture and a silent prayer that the remainder of our journey would be safe.

Interesting church due to its shape, one of the symbols of the city
The Shrine of Our Lady of Pilgrimage is located in the historic center of Pontevedra on the Plaza de La Peregrina. This church dominates the Plaza Peregrina, however is not very big and it has an unusual shape. Its construction began in 1778. A unique and unrepeatable basilica due to the characteristic shape of the shell. It is included in the cultural heritage of Galicia, being one of the most symbolic temples in the city. If you are going to Pontevedra, it is inevitable to see it as it is the essence of Pontevedra.
