A gentle day out in the country

Take a trip out to our outdoor Museum - a village from the time of Hans Christian Andersen, where everyday life is as it was in a 19th century Funen rural environment. Mediators from Living History give you an exciting, authentic glimpse of what everyday life was like back then, operating as farmers, craftworkers, labourers and servant girls in historical dress.

A gentle day out in the country
This is similar to many outdoor museums of old buildings though, obviously, this one is all about Denmark :-) The suggestion is that you plan to be here for a good four or five hours and bring a picnic with you as there are plenty of picnic tables available on the site and not much in the way of anywhere to buy food or drink. The only extra (20DKK) is for a trip around the site on a horse drawn wagon, so if you are bringing children, apart from this, they won't be clammering to get you to buy things. I loved the gentleness of the whole set-up and the initial video presentation (in the cinema next to the ticket desk) provides a good background for the visit. I would certainly recommend this, but only on a fine day. If it rains, you would get soggy here (a wet day is better spent at the castle about 15 km south of Odense).

Great to spend a mid-week day.
Go to the Funen village during mid week in order to skip the crowds. Lots of things to see if you´re interested in the old history and buildings. It is possible to take a horse carriage ride through the park and I recommend it. The old jail and the old school is my favourite.
