Beautiful Tranquil Church

Sat in the churchyard for a while then had a look inside the church. Like many churches I've visited in Denmark, it has a ship hanging from the ceiling - two in fact in this church. It's not something we see in the UK but apparently it's a "votive ship", often made and given as a gift to the church by local seamen and ship builders. The font was rough-hewn stone which contrasted dramatically with the opulence if the altar and the pulpit. The church sure at the brow of a hill at the end of the main street. Pop in if you're in Bogense - it's worth it.

    Old Church
Again, visiting old churches is one of my favourite things to do on my semi annual trip to Denmark. This one is located overlooking the sea. Love it.

    Beautiful church overlooking the sea
Saint Nicholas Church. The church stands at the end of the market place surrounded by old quaint houses and overlooking the sea and a camping site. The church wa built in 1406 on top of older church ruins. In the mid 15th century additions were made, including the tower which unusually is at the east end of the church. The church is so close to the rocky coast that the grounds west of the church are unfit for building on. The tall spire served as a landmark for shipping. In 2010 comprehensive restorationworks were completed. The church is beautiful and light. And it has, as most Danish churches, a ship hanging from the ceiling. This is a symbol of the travels from earth to the heavens. It is not a votive gift in Danish churches. The grounds are well kept and the view towards the sea are also beautiful. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
