Canale Grande, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy
4.0 (1.041 reviews) Spent Ranking #21 in Friuli Venezia Giulia Bodies of Water
Picturesque
The Canale Grande is not as big as you might be led to believe by the name, but it is a very picturesque area of Trieste. You will definitely find yourself crossing it many times when you visit the city. I found it particularly attractive at night, with the lights reflecting on it. There are bars/restaurants with terraces on both sides, the vibe is a bit touristy but I would recommend stopping for a drink or a meal at least once.

Definitely come here if you are walking around the city.
We visited the Grand Canal in Trieste whilst on a one day stop in the city on a Monday in June. Arriving on a cruise ship, we had opted to take a guided walk of the city and this area was on the route. The Grand Canal was originally a harbour area for the city, and the local souvenir shops sell postcards showing what the area was like in the early 20th century. These days it is a short canal with small pleasure craft on it and crossed by road bridges. On the day of our visit the water filled with some very large jelly fish. Being in the city centre, the area is very busy with traffic so if you are taking pictures keep a keen eye out for vehicles if you stray into the road. Near one of the bridges is a statue of James Joyce the Irish novelist, short story writer, poet, and literary critic chiefly famous for his wok ‘Ulysses’. Definitely come here if you are walking around the city.
