Lock from 1952
Margriet lock makes it possible for boats to sail from the IJsselmeer at Lemmer all the way up to Delfzijl in the North of Groningen province. A canal was dug especially for this purpose. The distance of the canal named after princes Margriet is 65 km. The lock replaced the old (much smaller) Lemmersluis. At the time it was a significant improvement of the waterway transport system in Friesland and Groningen. It still looks impressive.
