Port of Harlingen, Friesland Province, The Netherlands

Friesland's main connection with the sea
Since 1932 when the Zuiderzee (southsea) was blocked south of Harlingen, the port city became Friesland's only connection with the sea. By Dutch standards it is a very small port, mainly known because the ferries to Terschelling and Vlieland depart from here. The port area is a lively and cosy area. Many different types of vessels can be observed and most of the area is easily accessible on foot or by bike. Perhaps the port of Harlingen is a better place to get a feel of Dutch historic links with the sea than for instance Rotterdam.

Charming town
The town of Harlingen is one of the most charming towns that I have been to in Europe. It is quintessentially Netherlands, with its canals, boats, houses, shops and restaurants. If you ever have the chance to spend some time in Harlingen - please do! You won't regret it.

Quite a nice harbour!.
The Harlingen Harbour is where the ferries leave for the Wadden islands of Terschelling and Vlieland. It is about 25 minutes by train from Leeuwarden, with the train journey passing though quite beautiful nature. It was quite pleasant to take a walk here and in the small town next to it. It was a very nice way indeed to end my day-trip today to Friesland.??P.S. Spelling corrections: 1. *Oliebollen* posting: New Year's Eve and 2. *Sculptures*: Quite an inspiring work of art ...Sorry!✌✌
