Wonderful historic Frisian village on the IJssel lakeside
At Makkum the Grutte Sylroede flows out into the IJssellake. The lake used to be part of a sea and during medieval times monks built a sluice here. It made Makkum an important gateway to Friesland and a link to other parts of the Netherlands. The heydays of Makkum were during the 17th century. As a result of silting up the citylike village lost its function. However, the historic core of the place has been pretty well preserved ensuring a very pleasant ambiance. Watersports and tourism now are the most important source of income of the locals.

Nice Small Fishing Village
Friesland is one of the Provinces in the Netherlands, located in the northern part of the country. It has so many villages and is famous with the water activities such sport or fishing. Makkum is one of those villages and is located next to the lake "Ijssel" It's a nice place to stroll around. Makkum has a cute weigh house ( a national monument) which is a historical documentation center with exhibition rooms about the history of the village and surrounded. Love to see the artwork roundabout. Some roundabouts domes covered with tiles on which photos of Makkum around 1970 are depicted.

Nice cute village
Local shops, including a wine shop, toy shop, bakery with local cakes, and a variety of other shops. Nice, clean village. Easy to walk around as it is pedestrianized. Enjoyed our visit a lot.
