Rich and colorful collection on ice skating

The ice skating museum in Hindeloopen has a very rich and colorful collection of skates and skating related artefacts. The famous “11-cities” skating tours very much form a red thread through the exposition. The top piece of the collection no doubt us the frozen toe that Tinus Udding lost in the extremely cold winter of 1963.

    A mecca for skaters
This private museum is absolutely crammed with objects to do with THE national pastime of the Dutch in winter: skating. Everybody in the country knows of the Elfstedentocht, an event that takes place perhaps every 20 years on average, when thousands of enthusiasts compete to complete a circuit of some 200 kilometres linking 11 Friesian cities, with the winner becoming an instant national hero. Even the present king has taken part (under a pseudonym, of course...). There is also a section devoted to the typical painted wooden furniture made in this picturesque little town. Be aware, though, that - as in many smaller museums - explanatory texts are in Dutch only.

    Interesting
Stopped here on our way to Leeuwarden, it's a small museum with an interesting collection, especially big posters with a lot of information about all the editions of the 11 steden skating event. They had a little pumpkin game for kids which kept the ours entertained. The lady in the front desk was very friendly.
