A piece of Frisian history

    Tower of Pisa in Leeuwarden
This very beautiful, old tower is quite leaning, but that also gives it an extra charm. In 1595 the accompanying church collapsed, since then the tower stands alone. When the tower was only ten meters high it already started to subside! The tower can be visited with a local guide.

    Robust, unfinished, leaning tower
Mid 1500s an attempt to build a huge tower in the Frisian capital failed. All what is left, is a robust, but leaning structure. Like in Pisa, the foundation in soft sediment proved to be not good enough. City planners did a good job in integrating the historic tower in the new square set up. The ensemble (city hall, visitor center, tower, statue, trees) looks fine.
