Birch Hill Ski & Snowboard Area, Alaska, United States

4.0 (8 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Fort Wainwright Ski & Snowboard Areas

Very nice ski area in Fairbanks

We found this gem while visiting Fairbanks in February, we wanted to ski and see snow. As civilian you need to stop by the visitor office to get a pass to the ski resort, allow 30-45 minutes for this (very worth it). You will need valid ID: driver's license or passport, you can ask for a day pass or 7 day pass to bypass the Ft Wainwright. Once you have a pass drive to Birch Hill Ski & Snowboard Area. They have ski rentals and ski passes that are very affordable then other ski area. We also did snow tubing that was very fun. We very enjoy our day snow tubing and skiing, the staff were all very helpful and friendly. Overall we spent $60 per person including ski rental, ski pass, and tubing.

    Good fun
Best slope in the Fairbanks area. Affordable ski and board rentals. Not sure if there is another Army base with its own ski slope and lift. Course can become very fast due to low Temps in the winter. Closes down at -20 due to exposure concerns. Remember. -20 below in AK is like 20 above in Boston. No humidity.

Need to know before you go
My family and I had one day in Fairbanks in which we didn’t have plans so we read about winter activities in Fairbanks in local brochure. We wanted to go tubing so we suited up and headed out to the ski area and quickly noticed we were in the wrong place. Some locals tried their best to send us to another location ( not realizing we were about to enter the Fort Wainwright Military Base) once at the gate, we asked if this was the right place for tubing, the guards at the gate said yes but that we needed to proceed to the visitor center first to get a pass to get on base. Okay, so now we are ten minutes from the tubing opening for 11:00 session. We arrive at the visitors center and were immediately greeted by very rude military security personnel who told us we had to have our car rental agreement. Unfortunately, we did not have it in the car, it was back at our rental cabin.... so back to the cabin to retrieve rental agreement and return in hopes of making the 2:00 tubing session later. Once we returned to visitor center with car rental agreement, they sent us back to the car to retrieve everyone 16 and over with their ids. We got back in line, just in time for the military personnel to go on break and shift change to occur (which the next shift was late) once we finally made it to the window, they pretty much ran a back ground check on each of us , mind you.,, this took so long that the 2:00 snow tubing session had sold out while we were in line at visitors center. We went ahead and finished getting the passes in hopes of going tubing possibly the next day. I’m writing this review not to discredit birch hill ski/tubing center but for the fact that they NEED TO MAKE IT VERY CLEAR. What the process is to go tubing or skiing since the hill is on a military base.
