Paddling the Waccasassa River

The Waccasassa is a sweet paddle. I paddled east from the Waccasassa River Park, heading away from the bay. Although not as "coiffed" as some of the Florida designated paddling trails, the Waccasassa has a natural beauty and serene feel. There were lots of downed trees, and about an hour and a half into my paddle, I couldn't get through and had to turn back.

    A Good Hike
The river is located about 30 miles of of I-75 in Gainesville on SR 24. It's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Narrow and shallow it is a challenge, but a pleasure, to canoe. Not possible on my recent visit as drought conditions have made this waterway all but impossible to navigate. Good hike, though. Take a walking stick and you'll probably encounter deer, armadillos, raccoons and warterfowl. Park on the SE side of the bridge and good luck!

    Afternoon outing
We decided one evening to drive up there to the Henry Beck park and we were in utter amazement of how beautiful the place is and the upkeep of the facility but the Clarity and the cleanliness of the water and the river was just incredible
