We can’t say enough good things about Captain Sean and Mellow Mangrove. He has lived in the area his whole life and he knows several of the manatees individually. He told us all about the history and life of the manatees and the area and explained all of the rules thoroughly. We were the only boat in the area for most of the trip (we did the 7 am tour!). The sunrise was spectacular and the wetsuits made the water warm enough to hang out for a while. He was patient and kind with me freaking out while snorkeling and helped me find a good solution (i’m pretty sure a few of the manatees came over to me on a pity visitation…). The manatees were interactive and playful and it was very clear that Captain Sean respects them and is working hard to keep them happy and healthy. My friend and i had a great trip, this is absolutely the coolest thing either of us have ever done.

Swimming with the Sea Cows
My family and I had such a wonderful time during our manatee tour. We went on December 26 at 10:30 am, and the location we went to via the pontoon boat felt almost private. There were not too many people out on the water, but there were plenty of sea cows! We were also pleasantly surprised by how warm the boat itself was. The pontoon boat was enclosed on all sides, keeping things pretty toasty, especially when the sun hit the sides. While going into the water was chilly at first, the provided wet suits and pockets of water from the river kept us warm (with the exception of our feet that occasionally popped out of the water). We were also provided with noodles and goggles/snorkel. Everyone had a blast. It was such a special experience swimming with these peaceful and friendly creatures, and the captain was quite knowledgeable having grown up in the area. In addition to the captain, we had someone who went into the water with us to help point out manatee hot spots and encourage us not to drift too far from the boat. Things to note, by law only six people are allowed on the tour. Also, you can bring any snacks or drinks that you want, which is nice. Parking was simple, and there are public restrooms near the dock we departed from, making it easy to change in and out of a bathing suit. The captain also took lots of great pictures from the boat and made sure to text them to me before we left. I'd highly recommend Mellow Mangrove Charters if you're looking for an unforgettable experience.
