Turner River is excellent.
We didn't kayak independently but took a small boat tour into the Everglades. Really worth it. We recommend the trip out from the Ranger station outside of Everglade City.

Don't pay the ferryman until he takes you to the end
Good to listen to the dirver of the boat who has known the palce since he was 14 (believe?). He knew about the habits of alligators, their life and the habitat a lot. Not many alligators to see though. Recommend the Shark place a few miles away.
