Beautiful 16th-century Town Hall building at Grote Markt

The most impressive building at Grote Markt is Stadhuis (Town Hall), a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was designed by Flemish architect Cornelis Floris de Vriendt and constructed between 1561-65. It exudes a blend of Flemish and Italian Renaissance that delightfully adorns the square. The facade is worth viewing at daytime and then again in the evening while it is lit up with lights against dark skies. For those interested in visiting the inside, the ground floor is free to enter and visit from 9am to 6pm according to the Visit Antwerp website. This is also where you can read about and register for various tours that take in other parts of the Town Hall. Seems some tours depend on the time of year.

Grote Markt, The Sadhuis and Brabo Fountain are an Antwerp visit must.
Lots to see in this beautiful town square which is on a par if not more important than Bruges. The architecture and history of the buildings is a must to understand how Antwerp operated politically and with its guilds. Lots of brasseries and cafe's to sample although they are a little more pricy than most in Antwerp. We were there in January but I bet it's nice to sit and people watch in better weather. Research the story of Brabo to ensure your understanding of the birth of Antwerp.

Will be stunning once it emerges from its renovation
As at January 2020, you can't see or get into the Town Hall as it is undergoing a major renovation. However, there are some really helpful multi-lingual explanations, including videos, of what is going on as part of the works. This includes using QR codes to visit sites. It dominates the west side of the square and will definitely be on the list of things to come back to Antwerp and see (once it is finished).
