Incredible beauty, history and views

St Rumbolds Catherdral is so impressive and a true feast for the eyes. We loved that there was a small art exhibition on at the time to explore. We also decided to go up the tower - I would definitely recommend this as the views were incredible. The journey up was eased by a few stops to explore the history and artefacts of the cathedral which added interest to the experience.

    Amazing views
Although there are a lot of steps to reach the top it is definitely worth the climb. There are interesting facts and information on various levels as you climb, so you can stop for a rest. The bells are HUGE and I recommend being on that level when they chime so you can see them working - although you might want ear-plugs!! Great view from the top - you can see Brussels in one direction and Antwerp in the other and it feels very safe. A must trip while in Mechelen

Not just one, but TWO carillons in the tower!
Beautiful gothic cathedral, with tower containing two carillons, both at the disposal of the Koninklijke Beiaardschool "Jef Denyn", the largest and finest such school in the world. The lower carillon (Beiaard) is the "Oude" (old) one, which is tuned in mean-tone, and has the bells of several founders. The upper "neiuwe" (new) beiaard was all cast by Koninklijke Eijsbouts in the Netherlands in 1981, and is in modern tuning. When you hear the clock strike tunes played from the automatic drum, you hear the old carillon's bells. When you hear someone playing, it is usually on the new carillon. Inside the cathedral, you should not miss all of the artwork treasures, and hear the organ designed and dedicated by long-time cathedral organist Flor Peeters. After you see the carillons, you can ascend to the top of the tower and get the finest view of all directions of Mechelen and far beyond from the "Skywalk" on the top of the tower.
