Saint Nicholas Church, Flanders, Belgium

Massive supporting columns

The church construction began in the 13th century and completed in the 14th. The building has some of the biggest, most massive interior columns of any church we visited in Europe. There are two impressive stained-glass windows. The great square bell tower is built with an open structure, making it awe-inspiring to view from the interior of the church.

    A short visit is enough
In the central square of the city rises, imposing, Sint-Niklaaskirk/Saint Nicholas' Church. It's the first building you notice in the center of the city. In the spaces provided by the cathedral, an exhibition is organized, Inside Dali, which we visited. We also entered the cathedral, of course. We admired the construction and the high interior vaults. We also admired the altar and the organ – I understood that nowadays it no longer functional. I was surprised to see a less common show here: I don't know if it was a service, anyway, someone sang a religious song without a doubt, and a lady was dancing in front of the altar. Odd! We lit a candle, we raised prayer for the health and well-being of our loved ones, eternal rest to those who left among us and we went out.

    Fantastic Church in Central Ghent
This impressive church, right on the main square in Ghent, is an imposing presence. When we visited on our summer holiday, the Nave of the church was open, as it was hosting a flea market, with vendors selling everyone from paintings, vintage clothes, collectables, souvenirs, and more. While we got a good sense of the former grandeur of this ancient building, it was a bit run-down, and we couldn't access the choir, apse, and transept areas.
