Outstanding museum — treasure trove of Flemish art

At the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSK), you can discover more than 400 masterpieces of European art from the Middle Ages to the present day. In our iconic building, Old Masters such as Bosch and Rubens hang alongside Impressionists, Surrealists and Modernists. With names like Ensor, Magritte and Permeke, Belgian art is well represented. And you can now also witness the live restoration of the Ghent Altarpiece, behind the glass wall of the restoration room. The museum shop and restaurant, a diverse programme with room for contemporary art and our location in the Citadel park all turn the museum into a vibrant place where you can easily pass a few hours surrounded by beauty.

Museum voor Schone Kunsten is my top favorite museum in Belgium
Museum voor Schone Kunsten is my top favorite museum in Belgium. My experience here was even better then The Royal Museums of Fine Arts - Brussels museum that is my second favorite museum in Belgium. The building looks recently renovated and the background colors of the walls enhance the whole experience of admiring the masterpieces exposed. The collection includes Old Masters such as Jheronimus Bosch, Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck hang alongside impressionists, surrealists and modernists such as James Ensor, Auguste Rodin, Emile Claus, René Magritte and George Minne. If you enjoy art, a visit to Museum voor Schone Kunsten is a must.

Van Eyck Major Exhibition till April 30, 2020
If you are interested in art and in particular painting you cannot miss this exhibition. Go to the website vaneyck2020,be to see which days still have tickets. I advise going at opening time, be there 15 minutes in advance, rush through the introductory rooms and start with the panels of Adam and Eve. We visited the exhibition on a tuesday afternoon and a wednesday morning. Many of the paintings are very small and in the early morning you may still be able to have a really close look if you go immediately to the real stuff. And bring a magnifying glass or a good nearsighted since-nez. The exhibition is called "an optical revolution" and indeed Van Eyck revolutionised painting more than any other painter west of the bosporus. Not just by perfecting oil painting but also by his inimitable powers of observation and representation.
