Nice, pedestrianised shopping street

This is a great street! You can walk fairly freely from the fear of being run over by a car. There is some traffic, so you need to be careful, but it's mostly pedestrians who rule in this street. There are numerous shops of every description in this street. It's like a huge a shopping mall. Into one shop, out of another and back into another.... Fashion shops, cafes, restaurants, tourist shops, electronics shops, offices, just about anything, it's all here. And it is quite pleasant, as long as you want to make it so.

    Main shopping street in Antwerp
The Meir is the main shopping street in Antwerp. It stretches from the Anthony Van Dyck Monument at Leysstraat in the east to the Meirbrug junction to the west. The street is roughly 550 metres in length and has some of the most expensive rent space in all of Belgium. In what is considered by some to be a Belgium version of NYC's 5th Avenue, you will find a mix of luxury retail brand shops, department stores like HEMA, shopping malls including the Grand Bazaar and Stadsfeestzaal along with historic buildings such as Paleis op de Meir and Rubens house and workshop. There are chocolate shops, nice restaurants and more casual eateries as well. The entire street is pedestrian only these days so it is easy to stroll along Meir even if you are not keen on shopping. This also makes for a convenient walking route between Antwerp Central Station and sightseeing around Grote Markt so good chance you are passing along the Meir at some stage of your visit to Antwerp.

Number one shopping street in Antwerp
This used to be or perhaps still is Belgium's premium shopping area. More and more people buy through internet or prefer a more compact climatized mall. The effect is noticeable as I saw quite a few vacant places. However, the pedestrianized street is great to walk through on a warm October day with plenty of people around and all kinds of shops (also unique ones and not just part of chains). Don't forget to look up at the numbers 50 (palace) and 85 (Rococo style building).
