Wonderful architecture

We walked some distance in order to get to this area. It was worth it! The buildings are absolutely amazing. The architecture is fantastic. This area is quite unique in Antwerp. Apparently the area used to belong to some filthy rich family or families, back in the 19th century, and the area has been named after them. The houses appear to be either huge homes or townhouses with gardens in the front. Some seem to be much bigger than others. Some appear to be almost like castles. Nevertheless this unique area is worth a visit, at least from an aesthetic and architectural viewpoint.

A view into the past of Antwerp
The perfectly preserved Jugendstil and Art Deco houses in this street date from 1881 - 1914. Although it's not near the city center, it's certainly worthwhile to take a tram or to walk there if you want to take home some beautiful memories (and pictures) of Antwerp in one of it's many glory periods. Just a little over 100 years ago, this part of the city was still farmland; part of the Zurenborg estate of Baron Cogels-Osy. It used to be the most luxurious residential area for the rich in Antwerp.

Zurenborg, Antwerp: the best Art Nouveau suburb in the world.
Zurenborg, Antwerp: the best Art Nouveau suburb in the world. We stayed on this main street in the wonderful Abondance Logis the only b & b in this hotelless area, but there are plenty of cafes and restaurants are at either end of the street and trams go up and down. Berchem main railway and bus/tram station is at the bottom and the local airport beyond and the fanatastic central station the other way. All the houses are to die for; there is not one ordinary house in the whole suburb and even the one modern house is interesting. Great minor architects have gone to town here and Brussels, Vienna, Barcelona cannot compare or compete with Zurenborg, which on its own makes Antwerp worth visiting, never mind the artistic centre of the city. Stunning!
