Great experience!
I traveled to Ranomafana with my girlfriend for New Year's Eve 2017, and we had a wonderful time. I found the national park to be a great experience, and we saw lots of lemurs, chameleons, and other wildlife. A few quick learnings... 1. You need a driver to get here. You can take a taxi brousse from Tana, but lordy that's a commute. Our driver Maheen was outstanding, probably the best part of our trip. His number is 034 91 923 71, or you can reach him on FB at jaona.mahenina. 2. Wear long socks!!! The leaches are brutal if you don't have long socks. They drove my girlfriend and me crazy, and they are relentless. With long socks, it goes away. 3. I'd really recommend going into the primary forest for an overnight stay. It's so much less crowded there, and it's really a different experience. Overall, we really enjoyed Ranomafana but didn't consider it to be essential. Our favorite stops were the Allees des Baobab, Tsiribihina river cruise (not for the weak of heart!), trekking in the Zafimaniry villages, and Morondava (way underrated IMO).

Nice hiking in Ranomafana National Park
Each couple or group has its own guide, which means that sometimes it is literally over the head. Certainly when after a while we discover a first group of golden bamboo lemurs, the tourists crowd each other on a square meter to conquer the best place. After all, the animals are hidden behind some branches and leaves so that they are very difficult to see or to photograph. The animals also hopping regularly from one branch to the other, making it a bit of a gamble to choose a strategic shooting location. Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose! We linger for a while at the golden bamboo lemurs until our guide urges us excitedly to leave, because the very rare large bamboo lemur has been spotted in the area. We hurry to get to the spot as quickly as possible, but that is far from easy because in the meantime we no longer walk on the paths, but through the rainforest. Dangerous, therefore, to get stuck behind something or to trip over something. Moreover, last night's rain and this morning made everything slippery. To make matters worse, there are also leeches that sometimes feel like an exotic snack. Fortunately they do not transmit scary diseases such as a tick, but it is of course not nice when there is such a blood bubble hanging on your arm.
