Coastal Prairie Trail, Florida, United States

3.0 (4 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #24 in Everglades National Park Hiking Trails

Closed and unmaintained, but go to the trailhead!

If you're in the Everglades and decide to drive down to Flamingo (which I highly recommend), stop near the Coastal Prairie trailhead. This and the nearby trails are closed and aren't being maintained by NPS, but the area along Florida Bay is stunning. I sat by the water and played some harp music as two ospreys nested in the distance. There were only a few people resting on the shore, and a few boats going by occasionally. Very peaceful and a world away from the northern part of the park.

The "Coastal Prairie Trail" is overgrown and dangerous for children The park does not maintain it at all. By looking at the map, it appears that this trail provides views of the water. Nope. It does not. Evidentially, there is a "Loop Trail" off the "Coastal Prairie Trail" that we missed, and maybe it has views of the water. If you want a paved, easy trail with a few views of the water, check out the "Guy Bradley" trail near the amphitheater by the campgrounds. This trail is not on the park map.
