Wonderful

Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

    Wonderful
We were in Edinburgh to visit the castle, booked the tickets through their website. Parking near the castle is limited, it sure if just for disabled guests however there is a pay and display carpark within walking distance. After booking tickets Historic Scotland emailed to say that some areas were closed due to.high winds and gave a link to check the status before we arrived. Thankfully the weather was good to us and everything was open when we arrived and we were also greated with beautiful clear skies. As well as my husband and I, two teenagers we had our younger son and all of enjoyed wandering around the castle, reading the exhibits and taking in the amazing views. The staff wee so friendly and informative, enjoying talking about the history of the castle. We ate lunch in the cafe, and as with all tourist places it was very pricey but adequate food. Highly recommend a visit if holidaying in Scotland.

Lovely views and interesting exhibits but gets busy very early...
A trip to Edinburgh wouldn't be complete without a visit to Edinburgh Castle, which is exactly what we did on our first day in the royal city. On the advise of a friend, we pre-booked our tickets which turned out to be exactly the right thing to do. The crowds at the ticket office were vast and disorganised, which meant it took a good 5 minutes for us to work out exactly where we needed to be and where we should head. Once inside, there was no denying the impressiveness of the building. Views out over the city and across the Firth of Forth from the ramparts were very impressive, whilst the areas we were able to access were interesting and informative. We chose not to purchase the audio guides due to budget and time constraints, but I'm sure it would have provided a different experience again if we had have done. Some areas of the castle were much busier than others; the queue to see the Scottish Crown Jewels being a case in point. Our visit was at 11am on a weekday and there was already a 25 minute wait, so I can easily imagine this could be doubled or tripled at the weekend, when no doubt the place is even busier. If you don't like crowds, heights or confined spaces, Edinburgh Castle might not be the place for you as it contains numerous examples of each. For the most part we enjoyed our visit, but came away feeling like we hadn't seen it all to its best advantage.
