Batticaloa Lagoon, Eastern Province, Sri Lanka

4.0 (4 reviews) Spent Ranking #13 in Batticaloa Bodies of Water

No boat rides today!

Our group of 15, travelling with Flamingo Lanka, visted the Batticloa Lagoon on 2nd December 2019. The lagoon opens onto the sea. The Batticloa Lighthouse overlooks the lagoon that is fed by a number of small rivers. Although visitors can normally enjoy a boat-ride in the lagoon, no rides were available on that day as the lagoon was filled to the brim after the recent rains. The lagoon provides a livelihood to shrimp farmers and fishermen in the surrounding villages. A small hexagonal cottage provides shelter and rest to visitors. There is a paid carpark to accommodate visitors. Mangroves along the shoreline of the lagoon protects the banks from erosion, winds, waves and floods. Birdlife is abundant.
