South End Museum, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Community museum and center
The museum is mainly about the forced removal of inhabitants from the South End neighborhood in the 1970s. I liked, they make an effort to put things into context. Forced removal of people from (close to) downtown areas happens all over the world. The economic benefits for those in power are obvious. Under Apartheid and the Groups Area act there was 'justification' on racial grounds, which even made it worse. It was one of the factors fuelling resistance, eventually leading to the demise of white-minority rule. Like the District 6 museum in Cape Town the museum is very much about resistance and life in the past. Entrance is free. Donation is appreciated.

THE STORY OF SOUTH END
a MUST SEE for the tourist if you want to understand the history of how the Northern Areas of the city came about. The beautifully show cased memorabilia donated by families who lived in South End and surrounding areas before apartheid is a must see .. what made PE tick before apartheid

Great potential - needs a little work
There is an amazing story here to be told. Problem is, the set up to the museum doesn't clearly explain to those not in the know about the forced relocation of this mixed race neighborhood by the South African government. Lots of interesting photographs of the old neighborhood, but none annotated or laid out thoughtfully enough to make sense. A real pity. Please rethink the layout of your museum, so it has the impact of the District 6 museum in Cape Town.
