A rare female moai is on display at this museum

This museum is a must visit for any traveler in Hanga Roa, Easter Island. It has loads of information on the island and it’s history with collections of several photographs and actual collectibles that were found on the island. This is the best place to view one of the very few female Moais on the island. A time of about 30-45 minutes is adequate to browse through the entire museum.

    Very important!
I would recommend that people go to this museum before entering anywhere else at Rapa Nui Island. The quality of knowledge found there is very high. Historical and cultural information that can be very handy when visiting other places in the Island. And for free!

    Small but important
This compact museum contains pictures, information and archeological displays on Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Hyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki 1947 expedition by raft across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands. It does a good job of explaining one of the theories on how the mo’ai were transported and erected. One of the few female mo’ai is displayed here as are relics showing what the eyes looked like – things you don’t readily see at the Ahu’s themselves. Take an hour to visit and learn
