The Great Gray River
Lagarfljót looks like a lake but is actually a river and, according to legend, it is the home of the Lagarfljótsormur, or Lagarfljóts-wyrm. It is grayish in color because the water in it is glacial runoff. There are plenty of enjoyable places to walk down to it and look around, perhaps the nicest being Atlavík in Hallormsstaður. The drive around the “lake” is nice in good weather and there are lots of things to see and do along the way, including Hallormsstaður forest, Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss, and Vallanes. Skriðuklaustur is also not far out of the way on that drive.

Pretty if you're in the area
We stopped here mainly because it wasn't far out of the way for us and we figured we'd check it out on the off chance that we catch a glimpse of the Lagarfljót Worm. Alas, we didn't see the worm, but the area area is beautiful nonetheless. There are many beautiful areas in Iceland though, so this one isn't really worth going too far out of your way to see unless you're just hoping you might happen upon the worm like we were.
