The flock roams the Ballooërveld

The flock of Balloo roams the Ballooërveld nature reserve, an extensive area mostly covered by heather. The sheep are accompanied by the (female) shepherd and dog. It is fun to watch the sheep and lambs cross the bicycle path!

Sheep and Shop - De Schaapskooi
De shepherds of Balloo (Herders van Balloo) are a couple who maintain a large flock of sheep based in the Schaapskooi on the Crabbenweg in Balloo. This is also an entrance to the big nature reserve of the Balloo-erveld, on which the sheep graze and you can have wonderful walks. The Schaapskooi is a great place to visit, there is even a fairly large parking lot available. Often the sheep are not there because they are roaming, but you can still see the Kooi and also visit a small museum. The shepherds have a shop next to the Kooi, Het Wolatelier, where you can buy wool and also meat and some artifacts. Tea is served. There is also a toilet available. The old Schaapskooi burned down in 2011 but was quickly rebuilt, the new one being opened late 2013. The sheep sometime can be seen around the towns of Balloo and Rolde or on the fields. See some pictures of the sheep around the Rolder Jacobuskerk.

    Sheep and working dogs
On Sundays and Wednesdays around 1600 hours the sheep will be brought in from the fields. You will see two boarder collie dogs bring the sheep in. Once in you can walk amongst the sheep, pet them and take pictures. In the area are mountain bike trails and walking trails. From the parking lot there is a 6km and 9km walking trail. If you have time before 1600 hours is a nice walk and you may even see the sheep. At the farm you can buy local gifts, coffee and a few snacks. Public washrooms are also on site.
