Lake Assal, Djibouti, Djibouti

4.5 (216 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Djibouti Bodies of Water

Breathtaking view

Lac Assal is 150m (492ft) below sea level, and is an aquatic wilderness surrounded by dormant volcanoes and black lava fields. The lake is a one-day trip on the tarmac road west from the capital. You will pass Lac Goubet on the way, a seawater loch known locally as 'the pit of demons', then pass a stark, apocalyptic volcanic neck separating the two lakes.

    Salt Everywhere
Unlike Lac Abbé this is easy to visit from Djibouti City and all is on a sealed road. On the way one passes the place where the African Somali and Arabian tectonic plates meets. Not only have created lac Assal but also the gradual movement will eventually tear Djibouti apart. At 153 metres below sea level Lac Assal is effectively a saline lake similar in nature to the Dead Sea. There are four main colours, blue, white, red and green. Crystallising salt may be seen across the lake. It is also possible to walk across the salt in some places. Naturally the locals sell various products. The easiest to buy is the salt sold in bags.

    Wonderful
It worth it to go to visit, the place is beautiful. We rent a car within someone from our hotel and went there. It was very windy and cloudy and we thought that we couldn't see how beautiful the place will be like on the pictures. But, it was wonderful, magic...just bring your swimming shoes if you want to go inside the lake
