Interesting Exhibit Room and coverage of the history of the Smithsonian
I visited the Smithsonian Institution Building also known as the Smithsonian Castle in August 2021. I went at 8:30 am on a Tuesday and it was closed (should have checked the website carefully). I returned the next day at 8:30 am. Both times I took the Washington metro to the "Smithsonian" metro station. There is an Exhibit Room with articles and items from each of the Smithsonian museums. There is also an exhibit on Mr. Smithson and how the Smithsonian was founded and developed. There is a gift and book shop and also a cafe. I think it is worth stopping here for an hour to get your bearings and plan before visiting some of the museums.

The Castle - great way to start your museums visits, and learn how they came about
It may be officially the Smithsonian Institution Building, but everyone calls it the Castle - even the brochures. This is a great first stop to get all your bearings, learn how the whole complex of museums came about, and start off somewhere that isn't crammed full with visitors. It doesn't take too long to go through, and you learn a lot of interesting tidbits.
