Wonderful Memorial for a Great Man

This memorial is so well done. The stone sculpture of Martin Luther King Jr. is the main feature, but his quotations flanking to each side of it are not to be skipped. We have stopped in during the day and after dark. I highly recommend going to this memorial at night...the illumination adds to the majesty of the memorial.

    A dream of peace….
I have visited many places that are significant to the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King. However, I have long desired to see Dr. King’s memorial in Washington. The monument is enormous and the sheer size represents what this man’s sacrifices meant for all people in the United States. Dr. King dreamed of a world were all people could live in peace and harmony and so the size of this monument is indeed symbolic of his dream for peace. Our tour guide indicated that the bottom of the monument has an unfinished look because it is the artist’s belief that Dr. King’s work was unfinished. That statement definitely made me think because art often is a reflection of life. I immensely enjoyed seeing the monument at night because it is absolutely beautiful when illuminated. In addition, the illuminated monument is a reminder to me that light can never be overcome by darkness. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dreamed of a better world for all and so this monument pays homage to his work, struggles, sacrifices, and accomplishments. Take a moment to visit Dr. King’s monument because it will definitely make you stop to think about one man’s dream to make our nation a better place for all.

    A heart-felt tribute
The symbolism in every element of this memorial is perfectly expressed. It is a beautiful and powerful testament to a man who changed our country profoundly. It is seated on the tidal basin, and I recommend walking around the basin to see it from the other side as well. Its power is reflected in the water.
