Must visit

Totally worth spending an hour to learn about the Timorese struggle for independence. Very well arranged, although more English language explanatory notes would be helpful. Tickets available at the gate at USD1.00. No photography inside allowed

This was a great museum. It was well set out and displays were in multiple languages. It told the story of Timor-Leste as a timeline. It was fascinating, I learned a lot. It was a shame they didn't have any English books on sale, as I would have liked to read more. It was interesting enough for the kids to stay focused long enough for us to get round most of it in detail.

A great overview of the East Timorese resistance.
Before visiting, I had only a minimal bit of knowledge about the history of East Timor: I knew broadly of their attempts to gain independence from Indonesia, and of Pope John Paul II's visit there and the aftermath that spurred international action. The museum does an excellent job of gong through the history without being overwhelming. All information in the nation exhibit is in Tetum, Portuguese, and English. While we were there, there was also a temporary/permanent exhibit on the role that the Timorese women played in the resistance. We thought we were out of luck because it was only in Tetum but an incredibly helpful museum staff member walked us through and explained everything in English. I regret that I do not remember his name, but he was intimately involved in the resistance ("It was a bad year, I was arrested twice and released but the 3rd time I was "invited" to give more information. Several times.") Many thanks to that gentleman for taking the time to talk to me and my wife.
