Nice beach for families

Stopped by the beach the other day for our first trip of the 2021 season since it was a warm early May day. Metered parking started May 1st, so we had to pay the centralized parking meter at a rate of $2 per hour. You can access parking via the Park Mobile app. The beach and parking lot were nearly empty, so we were able to easily secure parking and a beach blanket spot near the water. On this day we enjoyed building sand castles, digging in the sand, searching for sea shells, watching the seagulls and watching the ferry go in & out of port. We didn't see much live wildlife this visit other than the seagulls. We found lots of dead calico crabs, some dead horseshoe crabs and even a dead fish. Not sure what that was all about because we usually don't see a bunch of dead sea life. We did not actually swim in the water on this day though. It was a little early in the season to actually get into the water although we did dip out toes in the water and it was chilly. Lifeguards were not on duty yet since they don't start until around Memorial Day weekend. However, the beach restrooms were already open and the outdoor sprinkler poles were on for rinsing off your feet/body. Overall, we enjoyed our first trip to Lewes Beach for the season. This is a great beach for families with small kids. The sand is generally soft although you can still get lucky and find little gems like beach pebbles and seashells. There are little to no waves, so great for young kids that are afraid of big waves and getting knocked down. We enjoy this beach. There are 2 separate parking lots and 2 separate bath/restrooms. One of the parking lots has a snack shack and is adjacent to a DQ should you find yourself hungry while on the beach!

    Nice beach for families
This is a great beach for families with small children or elderly who fear getting knocked down by waves. The are minimal to no waves here. So, you can feel pretty safe letting your little ones play in the water here. On a low tide you can walk out pretty far before the water gets deep & little islands often form, which the kids love to play on. Sand is fairly soft & if you're lucky you will find sea shells along the shoreline. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season during the day. There are 2 separate parking lots to Lewes Beach (A & B). One has a bathhouse while the other just has restrooms and outdoor sprinklers. Parking can be tight here. Parking is paid at a central meter at a rate, which I believe is around $2 per hour, that is reasonable. Planet Ice does walk up and down the beach with a cooler selling water ice. There is also a small snack stand sponsored by the Lions club that sells hot foot, drinks and snacks on the main beach in front of the bath house. DQ is also in the adjacent parking lot should you desire fast food or a cone. Beach is located next to the Lewes Ferry terminal so you can watch the ferries cruise in and out of port all day. Looking the other direction, you can see the big wind turbine off in the distance at UD’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes. Often you will see sailboats off shore as well. Seagulls are just about always present. We have seen other sea life here too..from crabs, horseshoe crabs and hermit crabs to fish. We usually get to the beach several times per month during the summer. However, we have only been once this season; in the beginning of June 2020 (during the pandemic). The beach was NOT crowded while we were there and most people were social distancing. At that time, masks were NOT required on the beaches. Overall, a nice beach for those seeking to relax with their family. Not a good beach for surfing, boogie boarding or playing in waves. I would recommend for families with small children or elderly family members.
